Surprises are for birthdays, not bills.
We give a damn about Mother Earth.
And we’ve got the Sustainable Salons New Zealand badge to prove it. As loud and proud members of this social enterprise — and humans sharing the planet — we aim to give you better hair, with less impact. We stock eco-friendly hair products, reduce waste wherever possible (95% of our waste is recycled), use colours free from PPD, resorcinol and ammonia, and swap your standard foils for paper or recycled tin. We’re the first to admit salons are not the most sustainable place on Earth, so we’re constantly looking for ways to improve.
Good hair is a lifestyle.
Let’s be honest: this was never just about your roots. We get that your hair appointment is your identity, your quarterly mood lift, your time to read the damn book that’s been sitting on your bedside table for three months. So, we think beyond the basin to make your experience seamless. Can we get you something to drink? Here’s our menu. Prefer a silent appointment? Say no more. Want flawless hair all year round? We’ve got a subscription for that.
I have Tinder hair....
It's messy, dry, and I swipe it to the right hoping for good-looking results.

listen to what we’re jamming to in the salon
Your relationship with your hair stylist is one of the most important in your life (or at least we like to think so). We know your hair can make or break how you feel every day and we take that very seriously.
Our tight-knit crew of specialists work collaboratively, with each other and you. We’re proud to work in Pukekohe - because you shouldn’t have to go into Auckland city to have badass hair.
We love what we do and we’re shit-hot at it. We listen carefully, ask loads of questions and love when you trust us to create something incredible that perfectly suits you. We’re holistic - your hair’s health is just one part of the equation.
Common Thread also cares about our environmental footprint. Our products are sustainable and eco-friendly, with minimal packaging and a traceable providence.
We’re part of the Sustainable Salons New Zealand network and recycle 95 per cent of our waste. We use ammonia-free colours and paper as well as recycled tin foil. Essentially, we’re conscious consumers and our clients are, too.
Tracy Sarjant-Roberts has always been ambitious. At the tender age of 13 she wanted to be a hair stylist... and she wanted Stephen Marr to train her. By the time she was 15 she'd made that happen.
She then dreamed of owning a salon - Tracy was 26 when she opened Common Thread. Suffice to say, once she sets her mind to something, she gets shit done. Tracy has recruited stylists from D&M, Stephen Marr, and Servilles and (as well as training staff herself) to ensure people from across the Auckland region have easy access to highly-qualified stylists who push boundaries and produce award-winning work.
Common Thread now has a badass team of people who make you look and feel your best, every damn day. We’re passionate about wowing people. Don’t worry, we know that means different things to different people but we love the challenge of figuring out what your wow is and making it happen. We’re honest experts - you can trust us to advise you. And we’re not afraid to say no if you want us to do something we’re uncomfortable with.
Sustainability is really important to us. We love discussing how to make the world a better place... but we don’t just talk about it. All our products are eco-friendly, paraben-free and not tested on animals. We use ammonia free colours and will always consider your whole health picture when deciding how to treat, colour, cut and style your hair.
Common Thread - Empowering through beauty so that our people can be the best version of themselves.
Picture this - 16 years old, the first year of hairdressing and easily influenced. What's the cherry on top with this gem is those two ratty pieces of hair cascading down one's shoulders! Double shame - there clip in hair extensions bought with her first paycheck!
